VLOGS
Parent Signs explores the rich, lived experiences of becoming a parent in the Deaf community — journeys shaped by language, culture, and identity, grounded in something universal: the deep love and bond between parent and child.
HOW THEY WERE MADE
Students at The Royal School For The Deaf Derby took part in video history training and interviewed parents who are deaf. Through these intergenerational interviews, participants formed deep, meaningful connections by sharing their personal journeys of being deaf – both as teenagers and as parents.
This was as part of Nightlight Lullabies Derby Heritage Project. A year-long, citywide project bringing families in Derby together.
Nightlight Lullabies explores the universal experience of parenting and how we soothe our babies to sleep. A sound, light and performance installation inspired by research and creative workshops with Derbian parents, including the involvement of deaf communities through collaborations with the Royal School for the Deaf Derby, D-Youth Hub, and Action Deafness.
