VISUAL VERNACULAR
The Signing Mother – A Visual Vernacular For Derby

We trained students from The Royal School for the Deaf Derby in video history. As part of the project, students interviewed parents who are deaf and took part in Visual Vernacular workshops led by Martin Glover and Zoë McWhinney.
From this research grew our bedtime story: The Signing Mother – A Visual Vernacular for Derby, told through British Sign Language and mime.
You can now experience The Signing Mother as it is video-mapped inside our giant bedside lamp — The Giant Daffodil, on display at Nightlight Lullabies at Derby Museum and Art Gallery until 1 November.
